Valley Park aquatic centre, Phase 2
Group Eight was responsible for all structural, mechanical and electrical engineering
services for the addition of an aquatics facility at the Valley Park Recreation Centre in Stoney Creek. The aquatic centre was a second phase addition to an existing community centre that already included a library, gymnasium and change rooms which were previously designed by Group Eight. The work involved planning, design, specifications, contract administration and general site review.
The 40,000 ft2 addition includes a 25 metre competitive pool with diving tower, a separate therapeutic/teaching pool, indoor water slide, sauna, large change rooms and a separate pool viewing area.
The design included a total pool environment system providing heat, dehumidification and air conditioning as required. To improve energy efficiency, each pool has its own heat exchange system. To conserve energy, a dehumidifying compressor heat recovery device helps to preheat both pool water and pool air. Underfloor PVC coated ductwork was used to provide air circulation at window areas. |

The electrical design utilizes high bay asymmetrical lighting in an open grid that reduces vertical glare from the pool water. Maintenance is made easier by the installation of lights at the pool perimeter. Indirect lighting is used over the teaching pool to simulate a daylight environment.
This project was designed to accommodate future expansion of an arena. |
