New twin-pad arena, Chedoke
Group
Eight was responsible for mechanical and electrical engineering
services for the new Chedoke twin-pad arena. The assignment included
preliminary and detail design, specifications, contract administration
and general construction review.
The
88,000 ft2, 2-level complex includes an Olympic-size ice
surface with seating for 800, a second "NHL" ice surface with seating
for 400, change/ washroom facilities, concessions, offices, multi-purpose
rooms, lounges, community and kitchen areas.
The mechanical design entailed HVAC, rink refrigeration, sprinklers, plumbing, drainage, monitoring and control systems. The 190 HP rink refrigeration plant was designed to provide summer ice and to efficiently perform a fast cool down to one ice surface when required. Energy saving features include refrigeration plant heat recovery for the ice flooding water and under-floor frost barrier heating. The Olympic-size arena has a roof mounted dehumidification and air-conditioning system to maintain summer humidity, and provide air-conditioning for public events.

An HV electrical substation and emergency power plant were part of the electrical design. The project included fire alarm, security, interior and exterior building illumination. As well, the design incorporated rink lighting with dimming controls, audio capabilities for sporting, special events and other public functions.
The mechanical and electrical designs were planned so that future expansion could be facilitated. |
