Wescast Industries Inc., Brantford

New technical development centre and corporate head office

Group Eight was responsible for all structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the new Technical Development Centre and Corporate Head Office of Wescast Industries. The work included planning, design, specifications, contract administration, equipment installation and site review.

The 2-storey, 9,652 m2 facility houses both the Technical Development Centre and Corporate Head Office and allows Wescast to carry out several diversified initiatives.

The Technical Development Centre conducts product research, design, testing and process development. It is comprised of a mini Foundry and Machine Shop that includes two Engine Exhaust Simulators, Pattern Shop, Cad Cam, Welding area, Melt and Pour area, Sand Lab, Flow Lab, Mechanical Test Lab and Melt Lab. Plans allow for future expansion accommodating two additional 500 lb. furnaces.

The new corporate headquarters for 230 people includes administrative Offices, Meeting Rooms, Training/Education Rooms, Lobby/Reception, Cafeteria, Kitchen, patio/garden and parking facilities. These areas are serviced by a variable volume heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system complete with hot water terminal reheat and radiant heating ceiling panels at the building perimeter.

The Boardroom, Training/Education Room and Cafeteria are equipped with multi-scene lighting dimming systems that are integrated with the audio/video systems.

The building automation system monitors and controls the HVAC systems as well as all outdoor lighting systems. Remote switching of the internal lighting circuits is controlled by low-voltage master switching stations. The central panel is interfaced with the building automation system providing a greater level of control, translating to energy-efficient use during non-business hours.
