Tinplate Division, project management, Phase 4
The #2 Tower Annealing Line was selected as the first process line to be upgraded with the new design and automated equipment. Group Eight was not only awarded the project
management work but also the mentor aspect. The implementation of this line would become the template for Dofasco's team. Dofasco would implement the remaining four lines.
Group Eight was responsible for the mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services for this project management assignment. The work included engineering co-ordination, construction, start-up and commissioning as well as international co-ordination. People and equipment from Germany, United States, England and Australia were
involved.
Work was scheduled to minimize disruption of the Tinplate Division. As much as possible was accomplished during regular line operations and considerable work would be completed during scheduled maintenance shutdowns. The final conversion was carried out during a 14-day, 24 hr/day period, followed by a very short commissioning period.

Production throughput of the #2 Tower Annealing Line showed steady increases and shortly surpassed existing production records. The line quickly became highly profitable for Dofasco. The work was completed on schedule and within budget. The success of this project showed upgrading an aging facility was a good business practice. After this project, Dofasco initiated the upgrades of four other processing lines. |
