New addition and partial demolition of existing building

Group Eight was responsible for structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the Research and Development Laboratory addition. The project included planning, design, specifications and general field review.

The structural steel was pre-tendered so that the HVAC equipment could be designed to suit the detailed roof openings.

The project includes: six Laboratories; explosion-proof Chemical Storage Rooms; offices for administration; multi-purpose rooms; washrooms; and future Cafeteria. The project was designed for future Laboratory additions.

The mechanical design included custom air handling units for the HVAC in labs complete with variable frequency drives and variable volume fume hoods controlled by the DDC building automation system. For energy efficiency, the design called for a glycol heat recovery circulating loop connected to the chiller condenser.

The new 25,000 ft2 addition was constructed between two existing buildings. The new addition joins the existing buildings creating continuity between structures.
Construction involved partial demolition of the existing buildings.
