Employee and fire department, McAnulty Building
As prime consultant, Group Eight was responsible for all structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the McAnulty Services Building Project. The work included planning, site development, detail design, project co-ordination, specifications, contract administration and field review.
The 3-storey building is primarily an employee shower/change facility that accommodates 1,000 male/female staff. All 1,000 lockers are ventilated individually. As well, the structure includes a separate fitness area and fire department administration, training and change facilities. The new 33,000 ft2 structure is attached to an existing fire hall.
Plant steam, which is a by-product of the steel making industry, is harnessed and utilized to heat and provide hot water to the building. The steam is brought in from the main plant via an overhead pipe bridge that crosses a municipal roadway.

A relocated pipe bridge brings in plant steam energy to the facility. |
Extensive use of glass block provides security, and privacy and is low maintenance, yet allows natural light in an industrial environment.
