Renovation: Intensive Care Unit and Burn Trauma Unit

Group Eight was responsible for all the mechanical and electrical engineering services for the renovation of the 6,000 ft2 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Burn Trauma Unit (BTU) at the General Site of Hamilton Health Sciences. The work included preliminary and detail design, specifications, contract administration and general site review. This project was carried out in two phases. It was essential that the two units remain operational during the renovation. The plumbing/drainage design ensured that the existing emergency department, located on the floor directly below, would continue to operate uninterrupted. The mechanical design work also included new HVAC and medical gas systems. In order to ensure an optimum room layout, the mechanical and electrical team worked closely with nursing staff to achieve the desired results concerning patient care equipment, medical gases and electrical services, particularly as it related to the patient bed headwall arrangement of services. The electrical work included illumination, isolated power systems, patient/nurse communication system, cardiac arrest alarms, fire alarm system, television, data and telephone cabling.
