New long-term care facility
Group Eight Engineering was responsible for all mechanical, electrical and structural
engineering services for the new, 120-bed, long-term care facility located in Stoney Creek. The work included planning, detail design, project co-ordination, specifications, contract
administration and general field review.
The 75,000 ft2 facility was designed with a central core structure that connects four separate, 2-storey wings. The central core is a 3-storey structure containing administration, fireplace lounge, kitchen and dining facilities as well as laundry, shipping and receiving areas.
Care was given to the building design to incorporate a 'residential feel'. This was achieved with wood framing, brick veneer and sloped and shingled roofs. The building is well situated, as it is nestled into the site's grade. The interior design maintains its 'residential feel' by the low floor to floor heights. This, however, did make co-ordination of mechanical and electrical services in the ceiling spaces very challenging.
The mechanical design incorporates heat recovery equipment and DDC controls on the residential HVAC systems and includes the high efficiency boilers for heating and domestic hot water.
