New secondary school, Saltfleet
All mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services for the new Saltfleet Secondary School were the responsibility of Group Eight Engineering Limited. The work involved design, specifications, contract administration and general site review.
The building is constructed of load-bearing masonry, with precast concrete slabs at the second floor level and steel joists and deck at the roof level.
To meet the building's heating and cooling requirements, the HVAC design utilizes a water source heat pump system supplemented by a gas-fired hot water boiler. Fresh air is circulated by indoor make-up air units with heat reclaim coils. Energy is managed by an electronic DDC (direct digital control) system that provides optimum savings while maintaining climatic comfort throughout the building.
Electrical aspects included an energy-efficient lighting system using electronic ballasts and T8 lamps. Indirect lighting was utilized in the Gymnasium. The school was completely wired for voice and data communication.
