Athletics facility, aquatic centre
Group Eight was responsible for the structural mechanical and electrical engineering
services for the athletics facility redevelopment and addition projects. The work included planning, design, specifications, contract administration and general site review. Group Eight was also involved in the previous phases which included a twin-pad arena, a fitness
centre and new change room and support facilities.
The final stage of the multi-phased project included the addition of an 8-lane, 25-metre competition swimming pool adjacent the university's existing 6-lane pool; a spectator gallery for 300; a large equipment storage room to support a variety of activities; and barrier-free access to the competitive pools, therapeutic pool, and exterior terrace.
To ensure the deck remained free of excess water, a gentle slope with a non-slip surface was designed with a continuous drain pattern. For maximum climate comfort, an overhead ventilation, variable throw diffuser system was used to circulate warm air to the deck level and cool air to a higher spectator elevation.

The design includes a special pool gutter system to reduce wave rebound in the outside lanes, which is critical for racing competitions. Natural lighting is achieved with a minimal glare by utilizing a sloping curtain wall. The project was completed on time and under budget. |
