New elementary school, St. Brigid's
Group Eight was responsible for the structural, mechanical and electrical engineering
services for Halton Catholic District School Board's new elementary school in Georgetown. Our assignment included design, specifications, contract administration and general construction review.
The 2-storey, 58,000 ft2 facility is heated and air-conditioned by an internal source heat pump system complete with hot water heating. A central humidification system maintains comfort levels throughout the heating season. As an energy efficiency measure, a central heat recovery unit was installed to recover waste heat from washroom exhaust air. To simplify equipment maintenance, heat pumps were located in individual mechanical service closets.
A combination PA/telephone system was used to provide communication flexibility in the classrooms. T8 lighting with electronic ballasts and multi-level switching were specified for energy efficiency for all classroom lighting.

Structural design elements included a brick clad cantilevered front entrance canopy and cathedral ceilings with clerestory skylights in the Library and Art Rooms. Precast slabs with concrete topping were incorporated throughout second floor areas to reduce cost, and provide fire protection and good vibration performance. |
