Warehouse
renovation Cambrant site
As mechanical, electrical and structural engineering consultants for the Cambrant project, Group Eight was responsible for design, specifications, contract administration and site review. Group Eight was given the challenge of converting this old warehouse into a modern education facility.
The first phase included converting the office area to classrooms and creating a new mechanical room. Phase 2 involved the gymnasium, fitness and change rooms. Phase 3 comprised the new entrance and lobby area. In the fourth phase, a sunken lecture hall, student lounge and a second floor for classrooms were created. The work required the removal of the existing slab, excavating, and underpinning existing footings.
The mechanical design utilized a simple hot water heating system and roof top package heating and cooling units. A direct digital control system was devised so that there could be supervision from the main campus in Hamilton.

In order to provide the necessary space for a gymnasium, the interior columns in the
warehouse were removed. The roof is now supported from above by means of a hollow structural section truss, spanning the full width of the building. The truss and its supporting columns are completely outside the existing building envelope. This unique design incorporates the largest standard structural shape produced in Canada as exterior columns. |
