New school, existing site, Queen Mary
Group Eight provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the new Queen Mary School built in Hamilton for the Hamilton Board of Education. The assignment included preliminary and detail design, specifications, contract administration and general construction review.
The new school was built on an existing site and was constructed as a two phase project. Half of the existing school was demolished and was replaced with Phase 1 of the new school. Once this was accomplished, the last half of the existing school was torn down so that Phase 2 of the new school could be completed. The phased construction approach required more flexibility in the mechanical and electrical designs so they could meet the requirements of each phase.
The mechanical systems consist of central air handling units with hot water heating and chilled water cooling. Waste heat is captured from the condenser water from the chillers and is used to provide 'free' hot water for the terminal reheat system serving classrooms.
