Student Residence, Fennell Campus
Structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the new, 4-storey, student residence were the responsibilities of Group Eight. The work included preliminary design, detail design, specifications, contract administration and site review.
The 124,350 ft2 design-build project had a fast-track schedule. The work was sequentially tendered to allow contractors to start foundations and site services while upper levels of the building were still at the design stage.
Structurally, the building is supported on concrete caissons and grade beams which support reinforced concrete block shear walls and precast concrete floor slabs.
The electrical design includes new, state-of-the-art, digital communications technology and a comprehensive video security system.
The mechanical design is comprised of a vertical fan coil system for heating and cooling of all bedroom suites, individually air conditioned throughout; remotely controlled energy
management system; rooftop heating and cooling plant; and independent heating and cooling systems for the ground floor activity areas. |

The facility contains 171, 2-bedroom suites with common areas on each floor, a fitness
centre, and large meeting room. It is expected that this facility will be used in the summer as accommodation for events, conventions or seminars booked at the college. As the first student residence for Mohawk College, this structure was designed to accommodate future expansion. |
